The outside unit of your HVAC system – known as the AC condenser – is no stranger to the wrath of Mother Nature. But while condensers are built with durable, weather-resistant materials, they can still be damaged by the heavy rains that occur during the warmer months.

Storm Damage

When storms roll in across Philadelphia, Bucks and Montgomery Counties, they bring with them heavy downpours and damaging winds. While the rain itself may not be enough to damage your AC condenser, the high winds can cause tree limbs and other debris to fall on or get inside of the unit.

Flooding

Localized flooding can result in major damage to your condenser unit. Although it’s rare to see flood waters reach the electrical components of your outdoor unit, if this does happen to you, make sure to contact your HVAC contractor before switching the condenser back on for your own safety.

Internal Corrosion

Though outdoor condenser units are made to weather all types of conditions, they should be turned off and covered prior to an extremely strong storm – particularly if you live in a flood-prone area. Just remember: as soon as the flooding has subsided, remove the cover to allow the system to dry out.

How to Protect Your AC from Rain and Storm Damage

There are some simple ways to protect your AC condenser when a big storm is forecasted for the East Coast. Keeping your yard free of leaves and other debris, as well as large objects that may become airborne if the winds start to pick up, helps your outdoor unit stay out of harm’s way. Again, if you live in a flood plain or flood-prone area, you may also want to consider using an AC cover if flooding is expected.
